Tara Camogie 7’s Tournament ~ Saturday 10 April 2010 Junior Competition Erin Go Bragh quickly established themselves as the dominant force in group one, easily beating Tara ’s inexperienced side 4-1 to 1-0 and followed that up with a 1-3 to no score victory over London Shinty. Tara rallied in their second match with a 3-2 to 1-0 victory over Shinty as the more experienced players in the team helped to guide the new girls. In group two Croydon were the ones to watch with comfortable victories over Brother Murphy’s (3-2 to 1-2) and Green Isles (1-5 to 0-2). Brother Murphy’s beat Green Isles 2-4 to 1-1 to ensure they finished second in the group. Cup semi finals followed and Tara were unlucky to be beaten by Croydon. The Tara juniors had steadily improved as the day went on and marshalled by Captain Susannah Gill in defence and Mags Heneghan in midfield they provided their best displays of hurling on the day. Croydon however were stronger and ensured their place in the final with a 2-1 to 0-3 victory. Erin Go Bragh continued their impressive displays with a 5-2 to 0-1 victory over Brother Murphy’s in the second semi final. While EGB and Croydon had a well deserved rest before their final the Plate final was contested between London Shinty (and a few Tara players as their squad had been depleted by injuries) and Green Isles, with Green Isles the winners (3-4 to 1-2). In the junior Cup final Erin Go Bragh ensured they remained undefeated all day with a narrow victory over Croydon. There was silence at the final whistle as both teams waited for the referee to announce the final score, 2-1 to 0-6, a single point ensuring that the Cup went to Erin Go Bragh for the very first time.
Shannon Rovers were the dominant force in Group one with an impressive 9-4 to 0-0 victory over the Tara 2 team, a 4-2 to 1-3 win over Liverpool University who provided their stiffest competition in Group one and a 5-8 to 1-2 victory over Killimor 1. As they easily topped the group, it was left to the other teams to fight it out for a place in the Cup semi final and the Plate final. Liverpool University progressed to the Cup semis after a 3-2 to 2-5 draw with Killimor 1 and a 3-4 to 0-0 win over Tara 2. A win for Killimor 1 over Tara 2 ensured that they would contest the Plate final. In the senior Group 2 Tara 1 had a comfortable stroll to the top of the table with a resounding 11-6 to 0-3 win over Brother Murphy’s, a 12-6 to 0-3 victory over Croydon and a win over Killimor 2. Croydon finished second in the group with wins over Brother Murphy’s (5-6 to 2-3) and Killimor 2 (3-9 to 0-0) to guarantee a semi final place against Shannon Rovers while Brother Murphy’s went on to play Killimor 1 in the Senior Plate Final. Tara 1 and Shannon Rovers won their semi finals setting up an exciting Senior Cup Final showdown. Killimor 1 beat Brother Murphy’s in the Senior Plate Final to ensure they headed back to Galway with some silverware. Senior Cup Final : Tara 5-5 v 5-7 Shannon Rovers Shannon Rovers who compete in Tipperary’s Senior Championship also have an impressive pedigree. The North Munster League Champions in 2009 came to the tournament with a selection of quality players including Rita Burke and Lorraine Davis who won Munster Junior Medals with Tipperary in 2009 and Sabrina Larkin named as an Ashbourne All Star earlier this year after her contribution to University of Limerick’s win over Cork IT in the Ashbourne Shield Final. While the two teams were evenly matched Tara appeared to have the edge in the first half. After Bid Grennan opened the scoring with a point, the scores kept coming from Angela Kenneally, Caroline Kelly and Helen Murphy with some great passes from Denise Gilligan and Rosie Cusack. Solid defending from Anne Gleeson and Anne Digan meant Tara only conceded two points in the first half. Half time and Tara were cruising at 3-3 to 0-2. Things changed quickly in the second half. Two quick goals and a point for Shannon Rovers meant that the game was wide open again. Despite another goal from Angela Kenneally, Shannon Rovers kept the pressure on and scored a third. It was end to end stuff as the scores kept flying in at either side, with Joanne Hamilton working hard for Tara after coming on at half time. Shannon Rovers were gaining on Tara and were it not for the heroics of goalkeeper Niamh Dolan, Rovers would have gone ahead sooner. However a goal and two points in quick succession from the Tipperary team ensured that the Cup went to Shannon Rovers. Final score 5-5 to 5-7. Individual awards went to Sinead Casey from Erin go Bragh for Junior Player of the Tournament while Angela Kenneally from Tara was voted Senior Player of the Tournament for the second year.
