Tara Camogie Club was formed in 1986 by the Kilkenny sisters, Carmel & Majella O Neill. Both have since returned to Ireland but return to London annually to check up on the Clubs activities.
There are 7 Clubs affiliated to the London County Camogie Board (including 2 Birmingham Clubs), making up 10 teams. The London County Board are in turn affiliated to Cumman Camogaiochta na nGael in Dublin (Camogie Headquarters).
Current Club members range in age from 12 years to 40+ with many of the younger crop of players playing camogie as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards scheme. These younger players can play competitive games in our Junior team and subject to numbers, our aim is to start an underage team.
We have many UK born players involved in our squad and although these girls weren't raised with the hurl in the hand, knew little of the Irish culture, they are as enthuastic as others and enjoy the complete package as much.
Also welcome on the Junior squad are girls that played underage or junior grade in Ireland. A fair amount of our current members played camogie during primary/secondary school age and then didn't pick up a hurley again until they arrived in London. Training sessions will soon build up the fitness levels and sharpness with the sliotar.
Tara's Senior team then of course caters for the more able and experienced players. The London County camogie team also offers an outlet for these girls to compete at a higher level against Irish opposition representing London should they wish.
We compete in both Championship and League competitions in London so welcome new players throughout the year. We participate in the Birmingham 12-a-side tournament and also try to make a trip to Ireland annually, to either visit a club (eg Broadford, Holycross); or attend the Kilmacud 7s or compete in the All-Ireland Club quarter finals.
Training takes place at Tir Chonaill Park, Berkeley Avenue, Greenford, usually twice a week from 7.30pm and is easily reached by tube. Lifts can be arranged from surrounding stations. Matches are usually on weekends with the odd midweek local game during summer
Equipment of hurls and helmets (advisable) are available through the Club but bring your own shin guards and football boots.
