Junior League Final 2009

Sunday 8th November 2009 ~ Greenford
Tara 3-2 Croydon 0-1

The Junior camogie season came to a gripping close yesterday in Greenford where the League final was played out between Tara and Croydon.  İt was a thrilling encounter from the first to final whistle as both sides had their sights set on victory.  The supporters on both sides added to the ocassion and helped drive on the players, who in turn cannot have left disappointed as these teams certainly delivered.  The first half in particular was a real pressure cooker of play with neither side giving an inch.  İt was as intense as it was exciting. What a difference a few short months makes in that the last time Croydon stepped out to face Tara. Play was tight for the majority of the first 30 minutes as both sides were locked in defensive play.  Tara’s forwards Jess Greene and Sheila Fernandes were buzzing around the Croydon goal but were unable to break Croydon. Tara were did not make use of the many chances and the wides were clocking up.It looked as though it was going to be level pegging at half time until Jess Greene finally found the net close to the half time whistle.  This surely must have given a few grey hairs to Tara’s manager, Paul Walsh. The score at the half time whistle – 1 goal to Tara.  Croydon had yet to score.

Tara came into their stride in the second half as play was a little looser, which Tara took advantage of in finding more space on the pitch. Tara’s midfield combination of Grace Hamilton, Colette Fahy and Rosie Sutcliffe worked hard to bring the sliotar to the forward line.  Colette Fahy and Grace Hamilton also scored a point apiece from play.  Great individual effort also from Rosie Sutcliffe who is soon to return home to her native New Zealand along with team mate Deborah Laurence. Cat Dwyer’s recent injury did not deter her from finding the net when she came on in the 2nd half. Dwyer made a big difference in the second half, leading by example up front, the expereince of last years finals standing her in good sted. Tara widened the gulf even more as Greene went on to score her second goal.  Commiserations to Croydon but the future of Junior camogie in London is bright based on yesterday’s display.

Team: B Purcell, O Maguire, N Barron, S Gill, C Nash, G Hamilton, R Sutclıffe, C Fahy, S Fernandes, C Aherne, J Greene, L Clarke, D Laurence, C Dwyer, B Doherty, J Thornton, Janine Heagney

John Mitchells Birmingham v Tara
Sunday 11 October ~ Pairc na hEireann

Tara Juniors winning streak continued on Sunday 11th October at the home grounds of John Mitchells, in Pairc na hEireann, Birmingham.  This was the Juniors second Sunday outing to Birmingham as the Junior League beckons to a close.  Tara certainly relished the challenge, romping home outright winners with a final tally of 12-12 to 0.  Credit is due to John Mitchells, a young squad with many just learning the skills of the game for the very first time.  Tara were dominant from the outset and rained in score after score from Sheila Fernandes’ 1st of 2 goals in the 1st minute to the last point in the closing stages, with little in the form of an answer from John Mitchells.  Top scorers on the day were Karen Curtin-Landy (2-6) who demonstrated accuracy and strength at every opportunity.  Sheila Fernandes, not only a forward, but a leader and mentor on the pitch, scored 2 -5.  Mid-field player Colette Fahy scored 3-0 from play and Jacqui Thornton also netted 2 fine goals.  Jeanine Heagney, Louise Clarke and Deborah Laurence each bagged a goal apiece.  Tara can gleam much confidence from this performance as they vie for League glory.  Their next League match sees them pitted against Fr Murphys on Saturday 24th October, who they last met in this year’s Junior Championship Final.  Continued thanks to our supporters and to management; Paul Walsh and Brian Mansfield whose intense training regime in advance of the Senior Club Championship match in Athleague, Co. Roscommon on 31st October is paying dividends as Tara undoubtedly go from strength to strength.

Tara:    G Hamilton (0-1), N Barron, S Gill, M Heneghan, C Fahy (3-0),  R Sutcliffe (0-1), C Nash, S Fernandes (2-5), L Clarke (1-0), J Heagney (1-0), K Curtin-Landy (2-6), J Thornton (1-0) ,  D Laurence (1-0).

Junior League
21 September 2009 ~ Tir Chonaill Park
Tara 8-3 v Brother Pearse 1-0

Tara’s Junior’s looked very impressive in this league clash against Bothers Pearse on Sunday morning in Greenford.  Pearses however were under strength missing many of their starting team. Tara were strong all over the field however with Orla Maguire steady as ever in defence. Claire Ahern stood out for Tara bagging a hatrick of goals along with a well taken point. Colette Fahy stopped attach after attach by Pearses in Tara’s defence.

Tara opened the scoring with a goal from the young Karen Curtin Landy. Ahern followed with a well taken point from 30 yards out. Tara’s Kiwi Rosie Sutcliffe was causing havoc and she made a blinding solo run, hand passed to captain Grace Hamilton who sent the sliotar to the back of the net. Jacqui Thornton followed with another goal for Tara and Marian Coleman pointed from 20 yards out. Half time score of 3-2 to 0-0 and Tara were cruising.

The second half was more of the same and Tara were in total control. Francis O’Neill, Therase Doyle and Martha O’Neill battled hard for Pearses but Tara just came in wave after wave. Sutcliffe started where she left off with some more blinding runs and sent the sliotar to the net for her second goal of the day. Great work by Cat Dwyer in the middle of the field in the build up. Doyle went back into goal for Pearses and made some great saves, denying Sutcliffe after a great passing move by Tara’s forwards. Pearses were not giving up however and clawed one goal back. A ball hit from way out the field, deceiving everyone and went into the net. More great work from Sutcliffe paid off as she hit the net again to complete her hatrick. Captain Hamilton hit in a high ball which deceived the Pearses goalie and dropped into the net. Hamilton followed with a well taken point. Ahern then went on a scoring spree, netting 3 times in the remaining 10 minutes.

Team: Becky Purcell, Orla Maguire, Debs Lawrence, Colette Fahy, Louise Clarke, Catherine Dwyer, Grace Hamilton (2-1), Claire Ahern (3-1), Marian Coleman (0-1), Rosie Sutcliffe (2-0), Jacqui Thornton (1-0), Karen-Curtin Landy (0-1), Breege Doherty.

Tara retain the Junior title and complete the Championship double

Junior Championship Final
Saturday 25 July 2009 - Tir Chonaill Park
Tara 7-5 v 2-2 Murphys

Tara’s Junior’s took the Junior Championship title for the second year running and also completed the Senior & Junior Championship double for 2009. On a day when Jesse Greene got a personnel tally of 5-4 Tara were good all over the field.

Camogie london
Tara got off to a great start and were up 3-3 at the mid point of the first half. The combination of Greene and Rosie Sutcliffe up front were just too hot to handle for the Fr Murphy’s defence. Sutcliffe bagged Tara’s first goal after a pass from Greene. Tara’s mid field were on top and were sending in quality ball to Tara’s forwards. In defence Nollaig Barron was a tower house and was cleaning up everything. Greene followed by with 2-3 (0-1 free) and at this stage Tara were cruising. Up front for Murphy’s Sue Harding looked dangerous but Tara’s defence pounced each time they were in possession. Fr Muphy’s were held to 2 points in the first half, an Emma Taylor free and Sue Harding point. Tara captain was leading by example and she grabbed a point for her team. Sutcliffe bagged another goal and this was a gem. She gathered the ball out around the 40 yard line, took off on a speedy solo run and struck a raspier to the bottom corner. Anna Gibson’s could do nothing about this one. Greene netted once more before half time leaving the score 4-4 to 0-2 to Tara at the break.

The second half started as the first with Tara on top. Barron started as she finished the first half and Suzanna Gill beside here was in fine form also. Fr Murphy’s were battling hard and Hannah Noone was doing everything in her power to get another score on the board for Murphy’s. However it was the Greene again who netted for Tara. In the middle of the field Hamilton and Collette Fahy were on top. Perhaps goal of the day was Greene Sutcliffe combination. Greene gathered the ball on the end line and sent a ball across the 21 right into the hand of Sutcliffe who buried the ball to the net. A top class goal by any standards. At this stage it was in the bag for Tara but that did not stop Murphy’s from pilling on the pressure and it finally paid off with a fantastic individual goal from Laura Kealy. A high ball in which she grabbed, turned and struck. Jacqui Thornton in the Tara goal could only look on. Murphy’s netted again with a goal from Harding this time. Another 1-1 from Greene to finish her tally of 5-4 and the cup was winging its way back into Tara hands.

Following last years Championship win and the regrading of many of lasts years winning team it is a credit to the Tara management and back room team to have another team gathered together to compete and win at this level again.

Junior Championship
Sunday 7th June @ 4.00pm
Tara v Fr Murphys

The thundery conditions of early Sunday morning had well and truly abated by the time of throw-in for the Junior Championship clash between Tara and Fr Murphys.  This fixture proved to be demanding from the outset with each score being hard fought.  However there was more fuel in Murphy’s tank and a precedent for future performance was set when they were first to the scoreboard with a point from play by the very able Emma Taylor.   Despite being 3 players short, Murphys dug deep and made up for the difference by reading the game well, gaining early possession and by putting in some hard running, which saw them eat up the ground.  Murphy’s Sinead Kirk was a fine example of this.  Tara’s Grace Hamilton responded by gaining possession of a puck-out from the goalkeeper and scoring a fine point.  Sheila Fernandes added another point to Tara’s tally.  Emma Taylor earned herself a 21 yard free after being tackled close to the goal and scored a second point for Murphys.   A goal for Murphys and the half time score was set at 2-2.

The second half saw many chances for Tara, who failed to dazzle on the pitch.  Murphys went on to score a further two goals and 1 point in a great display of strength and resilience.  Tara’s Karen Curtin Landy scored a goal for Tara after a great solo in from Marion Coleman.  Final score: Murphys 2-3 to Tara’s 1-2.

Junior Championship
18 May 2009 - Tir Chonaill Park
Tara 2-4 v 1-2 Bros Pearse

The second round of the Junior Camogie Championship on Saturday 16th May saw Tara pitted against Brother Pearses; and the stakes were high, each game now bringing the teams ever closer to the coveted season finale.  The stage was set at Tir Chonail Gaels grounds with throw-in at 11.00am.  Conditions were dry but a fierce wind made play very difficult indeed, with each player having to battle very hard for each and every score.

From the outset the game was tense and competitive.  Rosie Sutcliffe put Taras on the scoreboard with a goal after making plenty of a pass from Sarah Gaughan.  Tara goalkeeper, Jacqui Thornton put paid to Jennifer O’Donovan’s designs on a goal, but this was quickly followed by a point from a free from the 45 by Pearce’s Ann Cumiskey.  Tara’s Sutcliffe converted another opportunity into a point and Mary Cahill of Pearces pulled on a loose ball and scored a goal for her team. The half-time score was 1-1 to 1-2 in Pearce’s favour.

The second half was equally as exciting as the first as each team vied for dominance.  Tara’s Nollaig Barron demonstrated great strength and resolve in the Tara back line and was ably supported by Nicola Robinson and Susanna Gill.  Tara piled on the pressure in the second half with the wind in their backs and the forward line had many scoring opportunities that were quickly closed down by Pearce’s defence.  Tara’s captain Grace Hamilton scored two points and Cat Dwyer scored another, thus adding to their tally. Janine Heagney came on for Kate Barett in the second half and saw plenty of action in the forward line.  Tara’s Karen Curtin-Landy and Christina Nash battled hard in front of the Pearce’s goal in the closing stages and were finally rewarded when Nash passed to Landy in front of the goal which was buried in the Pearce’s net by Landy.  Victory to Tara with a final score of 2-4 to 1-2.

Tara: Jacqui Thornton, Orla Maguire, Susanna Gill, Nolliag Barron, Nicola Robinson, Grace Hamilton, Christina Nash, Cat Dwyer, Rosie Sutcliffe, Kate Barret, Karen Cutin-Landy, Srah Gaughan. Subs, Delia Midamba, Louise Clarke, Janine Heagney (for Kate Barrett), Isa Borchett.

5 April 2009 ~ Tir Chonaill Park
Tara v Erin go Bragh, Birmingham

It was a slow start for the Tara in the first 10 minutes. They enjoyed the majority of the possession but could not break the EGB defence. Even though EGB were depleted in numbers, only fielding 10, their defence battled hard. However the deadlock was broken after Rosie Sutcliffe gathered the ball in the centre hand passed Cat Dwyer who sent a rocket from 21 yards and gave the EGB goalie no chance. This score opened the flood gates and EGB just could not cope with the relentless Tara. Dwyer got a second after Sutcliffe won a free about 40 yards out. Dwyer took the free and the ball deceived the EGB goalie and dropped under the bar. Sutcliffe and Sheila Fernandes tagged on a point each. Tara were in the driving seat at this point. Nollaig Barron was strong in defence and up front Sutcliffe, Fernandes were doing damage. At mid field Cat Dwyer was having a stormer and sending in some great ball to the forwards. A succession of goals from Fernandes (2), Karen Curtin-Landy (2) and Marian Coleman (1) left the half time score 7-2 to 0-0 to Tara.

With a brigade of new players on the sideline wanting to impress management Tara made their 3 changes at half time. Tara began the second half as they finished the first with points from Sutcliffe (1), Coleman (1) and Dwyer (2). EGB fought well in the second half but they were always fighting an uphill battle. Sutcliffe all the way from New Zealand was showing a real flare for her newly found sport tagging on another 2 points. Sutcliffe who picked up a hurley just 6 weeks ago she is showing great potential. Fernandes hit the net again following a great flick from Coleman on the edge of the corner. The ball falling nicely for Fernandes who had an easy tap in. Another newcomer Kate Barrett scored a goal and Coleman then came into her own and hit the net twice. A great performance from all the Tara outfit. Final score 12-8 to 0-0

Charlie Jacobs from the Shawl presented the Tara Club with tracksuits. A hugh thanks to Charlie and everyone at the Shawl for their continued sponsorship

Croydon 0-3 v 1-0 Tara

Another away trip took Tara down to Mitcham for a replay of last years final against Croydon. Tara started against a strong wind in first. The back line had their backs against he walls but worked hard and held Croydon to 1 point from a free in the first half. Becky Purcell was solid in goal and worked tirelessly to keep the Croydon forwards at bay. Orla Maguire and Nolliag Bannon cleared a mountain of ball
Second half and Tara had the wind at their backs. Becky's puckouts were clearing midfield and landing in the forward line. Sheila Fernandes, Rosie Sutcliffe and Grace Hamilton worked hard to keep the ball going into the Tara forward line. The tiring legs of some of the Tara girls meant a few subs were required to freshen up the outfit. A wise move from manager Paul to move Rosie Sutcliffe to the forward line worked a treat when she scored a fantastic goal. Croydon’s goalie had no chance of saving the rocket.  Croydon scored 2 more points from frees, leaving the score 0-3 to 1-0, all square. Sutcliffe has another chance just before the final whistle however this time Croydon’s goalie made a great save. Final score 0-3 -1-0.

Team: Becky Purcell, Orla Maguire, Suzanna, Nollaig Bannon, Louise Clarke, Grace Hamilton, Rosie Sutcliffe, Marian Coleman, Breege Doherty, Sheila Fernandez, Stephanie Kilkenny, Karen Curtin-Landy.  Subs: Leah Horan for Stephanie Kilkenny, Janine Heagney for Breege Doherty, Caroline Syme for Karen Curtin-Landy.

Green Isles 1-05 v 2-02 Tara
Tara get season off to a good start

A draw was a good result for a totally changed Tara team who are defending their Junior League and Championship title from the 2008 season. A beautiful day in Ladywell was the setting against a Green Isle side who have some new faces for the 2009 season also. Tara’s new look team started well and some great defending from the back line gave the girls confidence. A first half goal from Leah Horan put Tara on the score board. Green Isle’s followed with a goal and 2 points from free’s by Geri Goring.  The Tara backline defended extremely well against what was a constant barrage of pressure from Green Isle, with Michelle McClafferty causing most havoc and scoring 2 points from frees. Grace Hamilton tagged on a point for Tara. The new look Tara defense remained cool inspite of rising temperatures and resisted the constant challenge from Green Isle before the break. Leaving the half time score 1-1 to 1-2 to Green Isle at half time
Tara dominated the second half with most of the possession. Mid fielders Hamilton, Cath Dwyer and Sarah Gaughan worked tirelessly through out the second half. Tara came close on many occasions to rattling the net but at this early stage of the season accuracy was proving difficult. Karen Curtain-Landy finally broke the deadlock in the second half with a goal. Geri Goring and McClafferty each scored point for Green Isle. The final score was 1-5 to 2-2.
The new look Tara outfit refreshed from the Birmingham tournament responded well to pressures from a strong Green Isle team and gained great experience in very hot conditions. Sincere thanks to Green Isle who as always made the traveling team feel very welcome and provided post match refreshments
